'ISO' refers to the speed at which electronic image sensors (in digital cameras) and film (in film cameras) react to light to form a picture. So ISO 400 is just one particular setting from the range of options on your camera.

'ISO' is not an acronym for a technical detail of the sensor. It simply stands for the organisation who devised the system and determined the measurements: International Organization for Standardization. The system is more or less standardized across film and digital Photography., with the same aperture and shutter speed values, a film and a digital camera set to ISO 400 would produce similar results in terms of exposure.

It's a decent rule of thumb to stick to ISO 100 (or the lowest option on your particular camera) whenever possible. The higher the ISO, the lower the quality of the image. So with a faster sensor/film (which makes low light digital photography much easier) you sacrifice some quality.

Whilst digital cameras are capable of ISO speeds much faster than 400, and the image quality at this speed will remain quite good, it is faster than required for most shots.

What is ISO speed?

ISO speed denotes the sensitivity of the film or the sensor in your camera... For example would be, you would use ISO 100 or ISO 200 for shooting pics in the daylight, while you would use ISO 400 for indoor and evening shots. And ISO 800 for night shots. However, you need to realise that in digital cameras, higher ISO speeds of 800 and more gives a lot of digital noise, because of higher sensor voltages. Ronnie --- http://www.propix.in

What is the iso code?

The International Standards Organisation code (ISO) was developed to consolidate the ASA/DIN system to rate the relative speed of various films. ISO 400 film is faster than ISO 100 film, for example, making it better for low-light or fast action photos

What does iso mean nonstandard?

Iso means "the same".

What does Isos mean?

Various meanings of ISO:1) International Organization for Standardization is a non-government organization that sets standards for different kinds of industry to promulgate quality and improvement to their respective industries.- One of the ISO standards is the "speed" assigned to photographic film, eg. ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400.- Similarly, the ISO on a digital camera refers to a light sensitivity setting.- The "ISO" file name extension term for the CD/DVD's were derived from their ISO 9660 standard file system.[In this context, 'ISO' is not an acronym for the name of the organisation -it is a word, pronounced 'eye-so' that represents the organisation, regardless of how the organisation's name is written in any language.]2) ISO on a message board, Craigslist or forum means "In Search Of"3) The word iso is from the Greek isos meaning equal. In Finnish, it means "great" or grand. It is a prefix in several other languages.4) The acronym can also mean International Socialist Organisation.

How would you set the ISO for shutter speed and aperture for correct exposure on a rainy day and why?

The ISO speed, shutter, and aperture are all interconnected. There is never necessarily one "correct" setting for all 3. However, if you're not shooting on a tripod, you probably want to set your shutter speed to 1/60 to reduce camera shake. To eliminate grain, you may want to keep your ISO below 400. It may be cloudy on a rainy day, so you may be able to shoot at f/8 or f/11. Of course, on most digital cameras you could select a shutter priority (meaning the camera will adjust the aperture for correct exposure at a shutter speed of 1/60) and then set your ISO to 400. The camera will automatically meter the scene and set the aperture correctly.

What does pushing film enable a photographer to do?

When a photographer pushes film, they use the film at a faster speed than it's rated for which allows for faster shutter speeds. Fast shutter speeds allow for capturing fast moving objects. If you push film, you need to let the lab that develops it know what speed you pushed it to so that they can process it correctly. Example: ISO 100 rated film can be pushed to ISO 200 or even ISO 400.

If you push a ISO 400 film one stop does it make it 200 or 800?

You would be exposing it as though it were ISO 800 and developing accordingly.

What is the wave speed of vissible light?

"Wave speed" is meaningless. Do you mean wavelength? That's roughly 400-700 nm.

What does ISO mean in the banking industry?

Why is ISO so important in photography?

It's a rating for the sensitivity of the film to light. The higher the number, the more sensitive. For digital, it represents a corresponding increase in the sensitivity of the ccd (the image capturing device). Either way, higher numbers trade off image quality for speed.
