This is just called nuclear energy (or Atomic energy).

Yes a beautiful phenomenon!

When lighter nuclei combine together heat energy is evolved along with some radiations. This is known as nuclear fusion. Very good example is the sun and stars where energy is produced only by this phenomenon
When a heavier nuclei split into lighter ones, once again heat is produced along with some kind of radiations. This is known as nuclear fission. Good example is the nuclear reactor where lot of heat energy is produced which in turn gets used to produce electricity.

The secret in nature goes this way. The simplest atom is the hydrogen where we have the lowest number ie one proton and one electron in its surrounding orbits.
According to Einstein, mass has come out of energy. So let us assume this hydrogen as one energy ball. When such four energy balls get combined together, certain amount of energy is given out in the form heat and other radiations and new ball named helium is formed.

There by, the mass of the product produced, namely helium, will be found less than the expected mass of the constituents ie two protons and two neutrons in the nucleus of the helium.

This is termed as Mass Defect. We use a convenient unit of mass in this situation instead the SI unit, kilogram. That convenient unit is Atomic Mass unit. Simply amu.
Same way eV is a convenient unit for energy instead joule.

In physics, the equivalent energy to this mass defect is named as binding energy (BE). It means that the energy already come out during binding process. Binding energy of a nucleus is divided by the number of nucleons in the nucleus. This is said to be binding energy per nucleon (BE/A), an important detail which would explain the secret of emission of heat energy during fission process.

Let us note the salient point that higher the BE/A more energy would be given out while forming such nuclei.

As we plot the BE/A with A in a graph, BE/A is found to be maximum (8.8MeV) for iron (A=56). So iron is the most stable element. (We call those, who is very stubborn, as a person with iron heart) This BE/A is found to be very low (2 M eV) for hydrogen, helium etc. (A slightly more than1). Same way it is comparatively lower (7.7MeV) for higher nuclei such as uranium, thorium etc. (A = round about 230 and above)
Thus when hydrogen get fused to form helium its BE/A increases.

When such uranium nuclei get split, it gives out some elements with lower A (barium, krypton). So elements with higher BE/A is formed. In turn, we easily understand that more energy would be given out. So, when heavier nuclei get split, enormous energy is liberated. This is how nature with its intelligence plays this dramatic behaviour.

The same intelligence, inherent in human, finds out this secret and has started to use that nuclear power positively in generating electricity. Unfortunately, misused by the same human brain, in the form of atom bomb exploded at Hiroshima. The problem is, along with heat energy some radiations such as alpha, beta and gamma rays are produced which are harmful.

The most advantage in nuclear fusion is that it gives harmless radiation but the pity is to start such nuclear fusion enormous energy is needed. That is "starting trouble".
If we find a good technique to keep fusion going on in a convenient way, then power crisis would come to an end, once for all.

What is the energy produced when an atom is split apart?

Energy is neither created nor destroyed. It is simply converted from one form to another. In nuclear fission (the splitting of atoms) the nucleus is split into two or more parts. The binding energy that represented the parent nucleus is now split into three or more parts - the binding energy that represents the two new nucleuses - and the residual binding energy that is left over. The residual energy is often represented as heat and radiation.

What happens when you split one atom of oxygen?

When one atom of oxygen is split, it releases a large amount of energy in the form of heat and light. This process is known as fission and can result in the production of two smaller atoms and several subatomic particles.

Is Atom Breakable?

Yes, atoms can be broken down into smaller particles through nuclear reactions. However, breaking an atom often results in the release of large amounts of energy and can have significant consequences.

Are early statements about the atom that said it could not be split still true today?

The division of atoms of Uranium is how nuclear energy is produced, and this creates smaller atoms; not long ago Sciencetist have found a smaller state of matter. The ending answer is no this is not true; early Sciencetist did not know much about atoms, but this knowledge has expanded through modern science, so a lot of old theories have become ruled out. I hope this helped, and I'm a ninth grader from California.

What happens when an atom is split?

What happens when a atom splits? Nuclear fusion occurs Edit 1: Not likely that a nuclear fusion would occur... When an atom split, it would produce an energy equal to its mass squared by the speed of light. There won't be a huge explosion, but there would be tiny amount of energy

Can you change atoms into energy?

No, we don't know yet but you can split atoms to create vast amounts of energy like the atom bomb

What is the power produced by splitting uranium atoms to release their energy called?

The power produced by splitting uranium atoms to release energy is called nuclear power. This process is known as nuclear fission, where the nucleus of a uranium atom is split into smaller nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of heat.

When atoms are split which part of the atom is energy released?

nucleus. the nucleus gets the energy and the realises it to the protons and the electrons.

If atom are the finest particle than why atom bomb are getting blast?

They split the atoms which causes a great release of energy.

What is Nuclear or atomic energy that requires an atom to be split called?

Splitting atoms is called fission.

During photosynthesis water molecules are split into atoms of oxygen and what?

Since water is comprised of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, when it is split into atoms by plants during photosynthesis the only other atoms other than oxygen that are produced are hydrogen atoms.

What does an atom splitter do?

Are atoms too small to split into pieces?

you can split atoms that's how they created the atom bomb

In both fusion and fission what is converted into energy?

Mass. When you split a large atom (fission) into parts the mass of the parts is less then the original atom. The "lost" mass comes out as energy. When you combine two small atoms into a larger atom (fusion) , the larger atom has less mass then the two original atoms and the "lost" mass comes out as energy.

What is the term for splitting a atom?

When you split an atom, you create a nuclear fission. The energy from splitting that atom is converted to electricity. To split an atom means to literally "break it in half." An atom has a nucleus with negatively charged electrons around it. The reaction of the atom splitting is so large that a small amount can convert into numerous amounts of energy.

What energy is stored in the center of atoms?

The energy stored in the center of atoms is nuclear energy. This energy is released through processes like nuclear fission and fusion, where the nucleus of an atom is split or combined, leading to the release of immense amounts of energy.
