However, the atomic number is only the number of protons in an atom and is not a true indicator of atomic weight. Variations in Neutron count can cause differences in atomic weights.

The Atomic Mass increases as you move across the Periodic Table because the table is arranged in order of atomic number.

To elaborate, the atomic number corresponds to the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom. As the number of protons in the atom increases, so does the weight proportionally increase. Atomic weight is the average weight of all known isotopes of the element on earth. Therefore, the heavier elements will appear closer to the right and bottom of the table.

As the atomic number increases by one, the number of protons increases by one also. The weight of one more proton in addition to any added neutrons creates a heavier atomic weight.

This is a general trend, but as always, there are exceptions.
