The three particles that make up an atom are protons, neutrons and electrons. However, electrons have a mass of 1/1837 of that of a proton or a neutron, which is a negliglible mass and therefore does not contribute to the mass of an atom. Therefore, the mass number of an atom is the sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons.

The answer your teacher is almost certainly looking for is "protons and neutrons", though this is an exceptionally poor question and your teacher deserves 40 lashes with a wet noodle for asking it.

Here's why:

  • The bulk of the mass of an atom is due to protons and neutrons, but electrons are not massless and make a small contribution also
  • Protons and neutrons are themselves made up of smaller particles called quarks, which are also subatomic particles and also have mass
  • The mass of an atom is not quite as simple as the mass of a proton times the number of protons plus the mass of a neutron times the number of neutrons; there's something called "mass defect" or "binding energy" that can make a significant contribution
  • The lead contender for the particle that "plays a role in" mass is the Higgs boson
