A mineral is always made up of crystals, but if the crystals are very small the mineral will not appear crystalline to the naked eye. A good example of this is quartz. Almost everyone is familiar with the colorless, transparent, 6 sided quartz crystal. But quartz also forms veins inside other rocks which don't appear crystalline at all. The quartz in the vein is still crystalline, it is just that the crystals are very, very small, because they formed too quickly to grow large enough to be visible to the naked eye.

Defects in crystals occur due to their temperature giving them energy, resulting in dislocations. If a crystal is above absolute zero, it will contain defects - there are differing degrees however. If a crystal is at abolute zero however, it is possible theoretically to be defect free. Also, consider that every edge of a crystal is a manner of defect.

In nature, a well formed crystal that exhibits textbook shape with well formed faces, straight lines, and sharp points is referred to as euhedral. Many crystals could be considered euhedral but not perfect. A naturally occurring perfect crystal would be the next thing to a complete impossibility due to variations in temperature and the effects of gravity.

The list of crystal defects is long. See the related link below.
