Sodium is a very highly reactive metal:

  • contact with water or anything containing water would release hydrogen gas which could ignite
  • contact with anything containing fatty acids (e.g. human skin) would turn the fatty acids to soaps
  • contact with air would cause oxidation of the sodium and release of hydrogen gas (there is water vapor in air)
  • If released hydrogen ignited the sodium metal would melt and run into things!!!
  • etc.
