Ozone is a molecule with a central oxygen atom that has three bonds, and a peripheral oxygen that only has one "full time" bond. This is a condition that neither will tolerate for very long. Very few molecules are immune to being oxidized, those being simple hydrocarbons, or molecules that have been partially or fully fluorinated (teflons(R) and PVDF).

Oxygen has the seond highest electronegativity of any element, at 3.5; only fluorine, at 4.0, has a higher electronegativity. Electronegativitiy meaures the attraction for electrons. Elements of high electronegativity can take electrons away from elements with lower electronegativity. Such electron exchanges are chemical reactions. Hence oxygen is reactive.

The Ozone Layer is unstable as fumes and toxins are being released into the air.

Fridges used to contain chemicals called CFC, standing for chlorofluorcarbons, which were also used in aerosols and air-conditioners. They destroyed a lot of ozone and are now banned in Europe.
