Laws vary by state, but generally if you fell your life or the lives of any of the occupants of the house are in danger you can use lethal force against the intruder. You are also of course permitted to use any level of force (within reason) to defend yourself against a non-lethal attack. Again laws vary by state, for instance here in CO, if someone breaks into your house, all you must do is order then to stop and if they don't then deadly force is authorized because every citizen has the right to be secure in their own home.
