Metacom, also known as King Philip, was a Native American leader of the Wampanoag tribe who played a central role in King Philip's War (1675-1676) against English colonists in New England. He was born around 1638 and became chief after his brother's death. The conflict arose from tensions over land, resources, and the encroachment of settlers on Native territories. Metacom's resistance ultimately ended with his death in 1676, leading to significant losses for Native Americans in the region.
