They aren't. It's a dying medium. It's been in decline since the bottom fell out of the speculator market in the early 1990s. The decline is mainly being driven by the fact that comics are actually a terrible value for your money. Think how long a comic keeps you entertained and how much you pay. Compare to other mediums.

A comic book keeps you for maybe 15 minutes per issue at a price of over $5 per issue. Sometimes well over.

A movie gives 1.5 to 3 hours for $10-15 depending on your theater.

A book costs $10-20 and locks you in for many hours of reading.

You might mean to ask why SUPERHEROES are suddenly so popular in movies and other entertainment. The answer to that is because they're a highly imaginative way to produce fun action/comedies which are commercially successful. Odds are their moment will pass at some point. But we're in peak superhero right now because the quality of CG got good enough to do these stories justice while at the same time good directors and actors and creative people were hired to work on them...whereas in the past only hacks would have worked on them.
