Hunters get a skill at lvl 10 allowing them to tame wild animals and make them their pets.
If you mean a small animal like a squirrel, snake, cat, ...
Per capitol (Orgrimmar, Stormwind, Thunder Bluff, Undercity, ...) you can find a pet vendor. Also in big cities like Shattrah or Dalaran.
There are some exclusive companions you get by visitng Blizzcon; you get a code which you need to enter ingame and presto chango, you have a limited edition companion.
