For me, the best thing is to download Fadas5.
This allows you to type a fada by typing the required letter and then hitting a hotkey. In this case the hotkey is (~) which is the key on the top left under (Esc). The great thing about this method is that it only takes two keystrokes to type a letter with a fada and it also types it in the right order, the way you would spell a word.
You can pin this program to the taskbar or to the start menu, or you can simply open it up and hit 'run' any time you're typing in Irish.
in my name the irish fada is on an i. like this í. to type an irish í you need to look on your right hand side on your keyboard. there are a set of numbers with arrowows under neath them. on the top row of them there is a key called "Num Lock" press it. then press the alt key (next to space bar) and on that set of numbers on the right hand side press 0237 while holding down alt key. this should give you a fada on an i. í í í. other letters are used with tht set of numbers aswell. but don't know the combinations by heart. hope this helps. on laptops it is different.
In most applications you can simply hold down the ALT key and enter the character code on the number pad (with or without NumLock enabled). When you release the ALT key, the character will appear.
Here are all the vowels with sínte fada:
Alt+0193 = Á
Alt+0201 = É
Alt+0205 = Í
Alt+0211 = Ó
Alt+0218 = Ú
Alt+0225 = á
Alt+0233 = é
Alt+0237 = í
Alt+0243 = ó
Alt+0250 = ú
It's a pity they aren't grouped together more logically as they'd be easier to remember. However, in Windows, if you run the "Character Map" application you can locate the code for any character in any installed font. The code for the highlighted character is shown in the lower-right. You can also select one or more common characters and copy them to the clipboard.

A fada is a diacritic which broadens, and thus accentuates, the vowel over which it is placed. It looks, and is similar to, the French grave accent (´). Another accent, called a seibhiú, modifies some consonants.
