By sending a series of signals through the air ( if you mean wireless ), these signals are ones and zeros. There a millions of these commands. These ones and zeros are computer language ( 0010110 could mean "The" for example. When tranfering words from computer from computer, they will be transfered to the one a zero language, or Metadata. (Something the computer can read). Then transfered back at the destination.

Viruses are tracked like this, everything consists of metadata, a Trojan or virus will show up like, this in the word Google, 110111001100234110, the 234 is the virus. The computers are unable too read it now, which can corrupt the file

Data travels through the internet in many ways a common way of this is though the phone line and into a connected modem then to your computer another way is through a wireless modem which you simply plug in through a USB port and you can get on the internet right away there are many other ways for transferring data like DSL and ADSL

When data is send to another end device or person it is forwarded to different routers which help guide it to the right location. All this happens at 96% of the speed of light. So you never even notice the micro seconds it takes.
