It has a great degree of variance. As was stated in the previous answer before I began to edit this question, leaving your computer on will result in a high electric bill. Also, there is a chance (of course, depending on your make and model of your computer, plus whether or not you have an intercooler) that your computer may overheat because of the intense work it is doing. A computer is currently one of the most advanced systems available to the public, and so the great work being done may result in burning up the thermal glue within your computer, at which point you would be forced to go to a local hardware store, buy certain thermal glue, come home, void the warranty and tamper with your computer by removing the cover and applying the thermal glue. By the time all this occurs, you may as well buy a new computer.

Now we will take another perspective. If you are to leave your computer off when not in use, there is no chance of overheating. Also, it will be cheaper on you in general. Unless your computer is unplugged, it still uses a small amount of electricity when it is off. However, this amount is greatly miniscule when compared to the computer if it is on. The only problem I can currently see is if your computer is one of those that are slow, and so it may take awhile to load up. However, if it is a slightly modern version, then this is no problem, and the beter choice overall is to cut it off when not in use.

(P.S. If you try to use your computer to hook up with certain gaming systems (such as Xbox 360), then your computer must be on to access it's music, video, and picture. However, if you don't have one of these, than you are fine.)

Should cut-off be hyphenated?

The term "cut-off" should be hyphenated when used as a noun or an adjective, such as in "the cut-off date" or "a cut-off point." However, when used as a verb, it is typically written as two separate words, as in "to cut off." Always consider the context to determine the correct usage.
