A mainframe computer works in much the same way as your home personal computer. It a Central Processing Unit (CPU), memory, Hard (disk) drives to store information and programs. Unlike a home computer made to be used by a single person, a mainframe computer allows hundreds (or even thousands) of users to connect and use the computer at the same time.
To allow this to happen, mainframes are built differently than smaller computers. They have more and faster memory, different, more flexible, faster, and possibly greater number of CPUs, more hard drives and greater storage capability. A mainframe will use a different type of connection and cabling between CPU, memory, hard drives and other devices that allow for faster transfer of greater amounts of information between them.
Instead of a relatively simple Windowing operating system, a mainframe system operating system needs to handle many more users. It needs to handle multiple concurrent user memory, device and file assignments. It needs to manage execution priorities so that no one user program "hogs" the whole machine, unless it is supposed to. It needs to protect one users program from other programs of the same or different user and to protect the integrity of the system from whatever a user privileged program can do.
All this may sound similar to what a Windows (or Linux) system needs to do but to a much greater degree.
Mainframes usually have huge computing powers startinf from tetraFlops. They are of various types and flavours and are usually custom built on the requirements of the customer who requires such a huge computing power .They usually scale entire rooms to full building floors and are clustered Towers having very high end power ,air conditiong requirements.

Computer viruses are simply computer programs, so they don't really have any physical appearance. You could say that they look like a long string of ones and zeros, or that they look like code. Some viruses may appear on your computer screen disguised as a game or other program - these viruses are called Trojans.
It is up to the browser you use. Just look around your browser options, and look for something like history
