Greetings There are basically two approaches for calculating Required Bollard Pull of a Tug for towing a Barge or a Ship. The first method is to determine the frictional resistance, wave-making resistance, wind resistance, current resistance and towrope resistance for a given tow speed and sum all these up and depending on the units used convert the same to BHP, after taking an efficiency factor. The second method is to determine the total force (which includes wind resistance, wave resistance, current resistance, all at zero tow speed), that is the force required of the Tug to ensure that it can hold the Tow in a given envriornemental criteria. As per IMO Guidelines for Safe Ocean Towing, a 5 metre wave, 40 knot wind and 1 Knot current is taken. Kind regards Tony Fernandez tony.fernandez@braemarfalconer.co.in

What is the name of the post on a pier that a ship is tied to with a hawser?

It is a "bollard." The hawser (rope) is attached to the bollard to anchor a ship in position at a pier or wharf.

How do you calculate safe working load of a bollard?

To calculate the safe working load of a ship's bollard, you need the working stress and the force applied. These two will help you compute the safe working load.

How do you calculate safe working load of a ship's bollard?

SWL = Ultimate (Breaking) Strength/Design (Safety) Factor Usually the safety factor used in lifting equipment is 5:1. Example: If you are using a 0.5" Improved Plow Wire Rope the ultimate strength is 11.5 tons. SWL = 11.5/5 = 2.3 tons The safety factor should go higher if there is possibility of injury or death. Example: Elevators use a 20:1 safety factor.

What is the ships displacement formula calculation?

The formula to calculate a ship's displacement is: Displacement = Weight of water displaced by the ship = Weight of the ship in air - Weight of the ship in water. This formula helps determine the volume of water that a ship displaces when it is floating in water.

How do you measure a ship's buoyancy?

A ship's buoyancy is typically measured by calculating the weight of the water it displaces compared to the weight of the ship itself. This is known as Archimedes' principle. It can also be determined by measuring the ship's draft or submerged volume.

Where would you find a bollard?

Many places. A mooring bollard would be found in a harbor on a ship dock. Parking bollards are found in parking lots protecting buildings and utilities. Traffic bollards are found on islands and protecting pedestrians. Safety bollards are found throughout industrial plants and warehouses protecting loading dock doors and wall, equipment, pallet rack, and employees.

What does bollard mean?

According to Wikipedia, a bollard is a sturdy, short, vertical post. The term originally referred to a post on a ship or quay used principally for mooring boats. It now also refers to posts installed to control road traffic and posts designed to prevent automotive vehicles from colliding or crashing into pedestrians and structures.

Does a ship propeller push or pull the ship?

If you are moving forward, the propellers are pushing it, if you are moving in reverse, the propellers are pulling it.

Can a space ship be so large it was its own gravitational pull?

yes it can

On Zelda phantom hourglass in the ghost ship floor B3 if you hit the switch before you pull the levers what do I do?

On Zelda phantom hourglass in the ghost ship floor B3 if you hit the switch before you pull the levers what do I do? It is ok. You can still pull the levers and it will still work.

What would you use to weigh a ship?

To weigh a ship, you would use a large-scale called a ship scale or a hydrostatic weighing system. This system measures the weight of the ship by calculating the water it displaces when floating in a body of water.

What is the unit of measurement in calculating the ship total resistance?

The unit of measurement commonly used for calculating ship total resistance is Newtons (N). Total resistance is the sum of different types of resistance a ship faces while in motion, such as wave-making resistance, viscous resistance, and appendage resistance.
