Notches on integrated circuit chips - and circuit boards - serve various purposes:

  • to ensure that the ic chip board is fitted the right way round in its holder or slot
  • to ensure that only the correct ics and circuit boards that are compatible with the electronic equipment are installed into the slot(s) provided. (For example on a computer's mother board.)

Example:

200-pin memory modules cannot be installed into 204-pin memory sockets because a notch would physically prevent it from being plugged in.
