There might be too many programs opened at the same time or there may not be enough memory in your computer. Or it could be due to viruses, spyware, bad memory, bad drivers, or bad CPU opcodes. If your PC hangs a lot, here are some things to check.
1. Try different memory. If you change memory or remove memory sticks one at a time and the problem stops, then memory is likely the problem.
2. Check the BIOS version and then compare that to the latest BIOS available for that exact motherboard. If not, then check the changelog and see if any of the changes mention stability, opcode fixes, or compatibility. If so, then follow the instructions and flash a newer BIOS version. However, this would be risky if the instability is due to another cause.
3. Replace drivers. If the lockups only happen when attempting to play sound or graphics, then you should try replacing the related drivers.
4. Replace any codec set that is installed. The files might be corrupted.
"Hanging" is a result of the computer's microprocessor (CPU) either freezing on a particular instruction, or stuck in an infinite loop due to poor programming or a hardware problem.
Hardware problems include overheating CPU's, bad memory, bad motherboard, bad power supply (possible, but not very likely), bad support circuitry (like video card, audio circuit, CD/DVD drive).
Most hardware errors can be detected by simply pressing your "Num Lock" key, and just look to see if the "Num Lock" key light on the keyboard lights on and off or not. Failure of the light to blink means the CPU is truly frozen...a bad sign for you. It may be time to bring your computer to a qualified repair facility.
Software errors (not excluding viruses incidentally) can cause a system to hang, but unlike the hardware failure, the keyboard usually stays functional. Running an anti-virus scan must be the first step, and then contacting the software vendor to see if a new release (that doesn't freeze) is available.
