Every printer is different.
It mainly depends on how long it took to send the information to the printer. If it is already in memory and is printing you can some times stop it in mid page. If you have the Print Utility handy you can sometimes just hurry up and click on the pause button and then cancel it before it has time to spool up.

In windows go to control panel, printers, double click your printer, right click on the print job in question and select cancel. Some printers have cancel button also.
