Here's how to really do it. Just buy a Vonage device plug into your computer then plug your phone into their device. Commit to 2 years, accept poor audio quality, a limit of 500 minutes a month and pay Vonage 25 dollars a month. I had it and it is not good. However, You can get magic jack. The audio is worse and service is even worse but its only about 40 dollars a year. Here's what I do currently. Get Google's Gmail. It includes free outgoing phone calls. Dowload their software, which includes a dial pad.Make sure you have a microphone plugged into your computer.

It is great service and its free. It is available only in the United States but I have it working in Canada by givingmy language preference in the sign-up as English (American).

People can't call ME using gmail phone, but I can call them, anywhere in North America free. The quality, like my microphone, is pretty good. I have a cell phone for incoming calls. Meanwhile, people can call me free of charge on Skype (computer based audio/video calling) but that's another story.

Go to the run feature in the start menu and type dialer. It looks like it will be perfect for our needs plus saving us some cash :)

I then used the search feature for dialer

The first one is some phone companies have software which allows you to connect wireless phones to your computer (how to connect a regular phone to computer is known for many years, if you need it just Google it). The second one is to use usually free software but with not free calls such as Skype (skype.com). You can open an online account on their website or directly from the skype software prepay some minutes (minimum is $10 I believe) and you can make call without problems worldwide.
