Yes it is compatible. Only thing is need driver before loading the xp please note down the name of driver. This is you can go device manager note each and every driver number and name carefully and search in internet. Once you get driver. Than you can start loading XP.. Another point It will not load window xp. It will say no hard drive/disk found. so follow this instruction. Enter the BIOS setup.
- Search for Serial ATA (SATA) settings and select it.
- Change the setting from AHCI to Compatibility.
- Save changes and exit BIOS setup.

I have a toshiba Satellite l40 laptop it came with no operating system and i am planning to install windows xp but when I try to install xp it says no hard drives found
A laptop which can be used with something, i.e: A laptop with a usb port is compatible with a usb stick. A laptop with Win XP is not compatible with MAC OSX programs. A laptop with a Graphics Card is compatible with the appropriate driver. I really could go on.
The most likely reason is that your laptop does not meet the system requirements for Windows XP.
