As you know, the brain is a muscle and if you don't use it you lose it. It's important to keep your mind active like playing Chess with one friend; cards with guests (on occasion) even taking a hobby up or take a night course on something you are interested in. If you enjoy the computer then play games on the computer (ones you have to think about.) Even working on this board is good "brain exercise" and you learn much on top of it all.
Some people may have short term memory out of habit from the environment they grew up in, while others may suffer from certain diseases that cause this. Also some medications can create short-term memory. Stress is also a factor for not being able to remember things well or missing appointments, etc. Perimenopause and menopause in women will cause this temporarily and "Andropause" (once called mid-life crisis) in men may cause this. The dark dreary days of winter can certainly cause the brain to feel sluggish. I live in beautiful British Columbia (it got that way from all the rain) and although today is a beautiful sunny day we have to put our sunglasses on! LOL We can have weeks of dreary wet weather and people feel lethargic and have what we refer to as "blond moments." LOL I try to keep busy with my work off the computer, on this board, and also my artwork and other projects I'm in the midst of as I've had Interior Decorating experience so love to work on the inside of my home during these miserable days and then I'm more active in the spring and summer. Taking long walks, doing Tai Chi, going to the gym and on occasion swimming. For quiet times and to get myself centered it's Tai Chi, gardening, fishing and camping.
Believe it or not a good exercise for the brain is Crossword Puzzles (start out with the mid-range ones or even the easier ones and work up.) I've done this for years and still do it when I'm waiting in an office for an appointment.
Good eating habits is a must and 3 1/2 ounces of protein at each meal for a woman and 6 - 8 ounces of protein for a man at each meal is the amount of protein needed for the brain and other organs to function. Exercise is right at the top of the list to keep the heart in good shape because it pumps oxygen to all organs including the brain. Jogging, biking, swimming, or working out at the gym. Golf is good to lower the stress level or fishing and camping. Getting back to the good old earth such as gardening is also helpful. Getting back to nature basically.
During stressful times (which most of us can have) it's important to simply write appointments on a calender or mark it in a daily journal (I use this all the time.)
In many cases for certain individuals it's just bad habits and they are lazy. In other words, "Let someone else remember all my appointments, etc.) My husband came from a family of bad habits, so when home he conveniently can have short-term memory. Instead of remembering for him I put up a calender in the kitchen right where he eats breakfast and gave him another habit .... look at the calender to see what appointments he may have that week! It took about a month, but he's on his own and doing well. I refuse to remind him unless he's had long and hard days at work. I also get him make his own appointments, do the odd bit of grocery shopping and some banking only because if something happened to me he would know how to do all these things properly. He relied on me too much because my memory is quite good and I'm 65. It makes him feel more responsible and also doesn't make him feel like he's growing old which we can all feel at times once one passes 40.
