The virus is submitted through email and originated from somewhere within the Philippines. The email attachment is usually named "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs". The purpose is to make the victim think they are receiving a love letter from a secret crush.

Opening the attachment would release a worm onto the computer which would overwrite files, particularly image files. This would damage websites when the worm overwrote the image files on the servers. And then it would duplicate by automatically sending itself to all the contacts in the email account of the person who clicked it.

There is another version of the virus called "Melissa", but it only duplicates itself to 50 contacts rather than the whole address book.

The virus caused billions of dollars worth of damage to the US economy and billions of Euros of damage to the European economy. As a result, the person who made the virus, whomever that may be, is now a wanted person.
