It depends on where the file is coming from. The biggest risk is that (especially from the internet or from an unknown sender in an email) the file will run a virus that attacks the computer in various ways. Also, the file may be corrupted (totally unreadable), or it could have some sort of spyware in it which sends another person any passwords or usernames that you type in when you are on the computer. Basically the best thing to do is assess the risk and if it is too high, don't open it.
