Usually the ancient Greeks would visit an oracle in order to take decisions on major issues of the city states. Some of the most famous oracles were the Dodona oracle in Epirus, Delphi in the mainland, Delos the holy island of Apollo, Samothrace the island in the north part of the Aegean sea. Of course the oracle of Amun Ra of Egypt that even Alexander the Great visited before he conducted his second battle at Issus.
Delphi was a town on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in Greece that housed the main temple of the sun god Apollo and site of the famous Oracle (the Oracle of Delphi). In Greek myth, the king of the god, Zeus, wanted to find the center of the world, and released two eagles to find it for him. The eagles met at Delphi, marking it as the center of the world.
That it is where Creon seeks help for Thebes' plight is the significance of Delphi in the prologue of "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Creon is not present when the play begins. He is the brother-in-law and royal colleague of Theban King Oedipus. Oedipus sends him to Delphi to find out from the Delphic oracle how to end the pestilence before it ends all life in Thebes.The Oracle at Delphi was considered their connection to the Gods above, specifically Apollo, so without him, they would have no true way to appeal to the Gods to save the city from the famine. Remember this is the ancient Greeks we are reading about. They always consulted their Oracle whenever making huge decisions or needed help instead of talking to the gods themselves.
Delphi was a vastly important place in ancient Greece. It was important because at Delphi was the Oracle of Delphi. At this shine people from all over the ancient world came to seek advice and find out what the future held. The ancient Roman general Sulla took control of Delphi and it became part of the ancient Roman empire in the early part of the first century BC BCE.
In Greek mythology, the god Apollo is associated with the sun, music, healing, and prophecy. He was believed to reside on Mount Olympus with the other gods. His major temple was located in Delphi, where the famous Oracle of Delphi resided.
