The SUBTOTAL function allows you to do different kinds of calculations. You can specify a range to act on and then, by using a number between 1 and 11 or 101 and 111, you can specify which of the following 11 functions you want to use:
AVERAGE, COUNT, COUNTA, MAX, MIN, PRODUCT, STDEV, STDEVP, SUM, VAR, VARP
For example, SUM is number 9 and also 109. So to use the SUBTOTAL function to sum the range A2:A30, you could do either of these:
=SUBTOTAL( 9, A2:A30 )
=SUBTOTAL( 109, A2:A30 )
If you use 1 to 11 as the code it will include hidden values, while 101 to 111 will ignore hidden cells.
The SUM function. You could also do it with the SUBTOTAL function, but the SUM function is the best one to use.
The SUBTOTAL function does not insert a row. It returns the result in the cell where you type the formula. See related links for information about the SUBTOTAL function.

There is no function called TOTAL in Excel. You can get totals using several functions, most commonly the SUM function. There is a function called SUBTOTAL which allows you to do different types of standard calculations, including getting totals, averages, highest numbers, lowest numbers and some other things.
Are you asking about something in Excel? Can you give example?

There are various ways you could do it, all of which just involve listing the cells. For example, each of these will do the same thing:=A3+C4+D10+F34+K90+V24=SUM(A3,C4,D10,F34,K90,V24)=SUBTOTAL(9,A3,C4,D10,F34,K90,V24)The 9 in the SUBTOTAL function tells Excel to add the listed cells. There are various ways you could do it, all of which just involve listing the cells. Before using the Subtotal command in Excel, your data must be organized in a tabular format with clear headers for each column. Additionally, the data should be sorted based on the column you want to group by, as the Subtotal command works by creating subtotals for each group. Ensure that there are no blank rows or columns within the data range to avoid errors in the subtotal calculations.
Sum is a mathematical term that is more commonly used than totals. A SUM function is found in all spreadsheet applications, not just Excel. There were other spreadsheet programs in existence before Excel and they used Sum, so Excel was following the standard. The SUM function is actually capable of doing lots of other things, as you can enclose any calculation in its brackets, though it is generally best to reserve SUM for summing a range of cells. There is also a function in Excel called SUBTOTAL which can do a range of calculations, combining some of the standard ones into a single function, such as summing, averaging, finding a maximum and minimum value etc.Sum is a mathematical term that is more commonly used than totals. When using the Subtotal command in spreadsheet software like Excel, a summary row is typically displayed after the last record of a table. This row contains the subtotal calculations for the specified groups or categories, such as sums, averages, or counts, based on the selected data. The subtotal row helps users quickly see aggregated information without manually calculating it.
A sum can be entered in any cell on a spreadsheet or by typing it into the formula bar. You can use calculations in lots of ways to do a sum, including the SUM function, the SUBTOTAL function, using Alt and the equals sign and using the Autosum button.A sum can be entered in any cell on a spreadsheet or by typing it into the formula bar. There is no step function in Excel. However, you can use excel to create a Step Function Chart. See related links for a video to explain the process.
