This means that either:

1)Your phone is not capable of receiving fax messages

2)Your fax machine is not working, is switched off or not plugged into the phone line

3)Someone has mis-dialled and is trying to send a fax to the wrong number.

4)Someone is trying to make a telephone call via the internet or a satellite phone, and your phone is not set up / cabable of receiving such calls.

5)If this happens on a terrestrial phone line, it could be a result of maintenance or testing of (one of) the local exchange/s

Not unless the fax machine is designed to monitor the line and answer when the fax tone is heard. It is most often not automatic.

What does phone error mean when you send a fax?

Typically it means that there is a problem with the fax machine's phone connection. It can be a line that doesn't have a dial tone, that has too much static on the phone line (or someone is using the phone line), or it can be a general problem with the phone line. The best way to test it is to make sure that your phone line is operating correctly, then make sure that your fax is correctly connected.

Do most fax machines generate a cng tone?

reference: ftp://ftp.faximum.com/pub/faqs/fax/fax-faq unfortunately CNG tones are only required if the fax machine is working in 'autmoatic mode'. If a person is manually faxing the standards do not require a CNG tone to be generated by the fax machine. This causes problems for some voice+fax services that rely on detecting the fax tone to switch their system to fax recipt mode.

How do you connect a mobile phone with a wireless fax machine?

To print to a fax machine wirelessly from a mobile phone: you would need a fax machine (or multifunction) with wifi capability. The drivers (or app) would be on the phone, and you could fax from the phone that way. This depends on the technology that both your phone and fax machine have. To fax from a mobile phone: there are services called "online fax" services that will let you send or receive faxes from a phone or computer. To fax wirlessly from a fax machine through a cell phone: this technology isn't on the market, however there are "GSM faxes" that can operate off of a cell phone signal.
