The cost of a new computer can vary greatly from about $400 to several million dollars. How much you spend will be determined by how you will use your computer.

  • Beginner - If you only use a computer to get on the internet and check email, you can get by on a fairly inexpensive computer package (mouse, keyboard, monitor and basic speakers) for about $400. If you already have a monitor and keyboard, you can buy the computer only for about $200. However, don't plan on doing too much else with this computer, unless you have a lot of patience!
  • Intermediate - If you are a modest user, plan on spending about $600 for a computer package, which would include decent speakers. However, if you anticipate using more photos, video and music, you should spend more, especially if you want faster performance!
  • Advanced Intermediate - If you are looking to actually "use" your computer for web, multimedia & software applications and you plan on keeping it for a while, you should expect to spend around $800 to $1000. This price point will provide decent package that would include a wireless mouse, keyboard, decent speakers and decent monitor.
  • Advanced - if you are a user of games & multimedia and/or you will use this computer for business and you demand fast performance, you should anticipate spending around $1000 to $2000, give or take a few hundred dollars.
  • Power User - Will spend $2000 and up for the latest and greatest!
  • Network Servers - In the range of $5000 and up,
  • Business Mainframes - In the range of $10000 to $100000, sometimes more,
  • Scientific/Engineering Supercomputers - Often several million dollars.
Bottom line...Like most things in life, "you get what you pay for" and because technology evolves, when you buy a computer you will pay more for the latest technology and a faster computer. For example, a $400 computer that you buy today is practically obsolete the day you buy it. Long term, you'll likely either replace it sooner or live with the constant frustration of a slow computer. Conversely, if you spend more, you will likely have a computer that will last you longer and you will be much happier with it, for many years of use. You will probably also be able to upgrade components on that computer easier, if your needs change.
