Yes. You should wear one whenever you work inside a computer.
You do not want to wear a wrist strap or be grounded when working on monitors/TVs or power supplies. Even when turned off these devices still hold a charge due to the large capacitors in them.
You take the wrist strap and look at both ends. One end should have a tinier strap attached to it. You take the tiny strap and look at the back end of the ds. It should have two small holes there. Then take the strap and stick it in one hole. then , push the strap, and it should come out the other hole. Take the strap that came out the hole, and make a loop, by splitting them apart. A wrist strap needs to be durable and comfortable, ensuring it can withstand regular use without causing discomfort. It should also be adjustable to fit various wrist sizes securely. Additionally, a reliable wrist strap should have a mechanism to prevent accidental release, keeping devices or equipment safe and secure during use. Lastly, the material should ideally be lightweight and water-resistant for added convenience.
The wrist strap is used to prevent static charge buildup, which can arc from you to the PC, and potentially cause damage. Because of this, there is no time when you should NOT wear a wrist strap. It may not be needed at all times, but it certainly doesn't cause an issue if you do. I do not always use this; when it is warm and damp, static charge buildup is less of a problem. Also, if you are working in an area away from things that naturally help build up charge on your person (shag carpet, wool,...), it because less of an issue. But there is always some level of risk involved when working inside a computer and not having this.
To the computer metal case, or you can buy a wireless anti-static wrist band.
An anti-static wrist strap should be fastened around your wrist, ensuring it makes good contact with your skin to effectively discharge any static electricity. The other end of the strap should be connected to a grounded object, such as a metal part of your workstation or an ESD-safe mat. This setup helps prevent static damage to sensitive electronic components during handling.
