Typically if the AC system has been drained for more than 2 days you need to replace the accumulator since it has silica type beads that can get into the system if over saturated.

When replacing the AC evaporator in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee are there any other components that need to be changed?

the receiver dryer and the orifice tube My 95 had a styrofoam liner in the evaporator box that had crumbled with age and plugged up not only the drain tube but the vent tubes. I would replace that as well as long as you have the dash apart. It is not a must but Personally I would consider replacing the heater core since you have to remove it to get the evaporator out anyway.

Can you use r-134a instead of r-22 Refrigerant?

10 years ago they kept telling us that replacing R12 a/c system with 134 gas was not recommended because will destroy the compressor and so on, I have retrofitted all my vehicles to 134A with no negative consequences ,so I believe it can be done Just have to evacuate the system totally and remove the oil from the condenser, evaporator and receiver dryer(Filter) and add the recommended oil for 134A gas .

How do you convert r12 to 134?

The manual will say change all the flexible lines and O rings. The truth is that you will need to remove the compressor and receiver tank. Drain all the oil from the compressor, replace the receiver/dryer. Insert new 134 compatible oil. Replace all disturbed O rings. Charge with 134A . Should work
