The duke of Beaufort introduced a game to British royalty at his country estate in 1873. The game became known as badminton, named after the duke's country estate called Badminton House. British army officers had brought an early version of the game back to Britain from India in the mid-19th century, although a similar game called shuttlecock, or jeu de volant, was played in Europe during the 1600s. It is thought to have evolved from a 5th century BCE Chinese game called ti jian zi, and was later played in ancient Greek and India.
