The year that Verrazano search for a route to the Indies through the continent was in 1525. The mistook Chesapeake Bay to be an opening through to the North American continent to China.
Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Italian explorer, searched for a route to the Indies through North America in 1524. Commissioned by the French crown, he explored parts of the Atlantic coast of North America, including what is now New York Harbor and the surrounding areas. His voyage aimed to find a passage to the Pacific and ultimately to Asia, but he did not succeed in locating such a route.
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_de_Verrazzano), he was the "first European to explore the Atlantic coast of North America...in 1524". Most notably, he traveled from France to New York Bay, stopping also at Cape Fear and Narragansett Bay.
Verrazano, Cartier, and Hudson were all explorers searching for a northwest passage to Asia, specifically a route that would allow for faster trade with the lucrative markets of the East Indies. Verrazano explored the eastern coast of North America for France, Cartier sought to establish French claims in Canada, and Hudson, sailing for both England and the Dutch, aimed to find a direct route through North America to the Pacific. Their expeditions contributed to European exploration and colonization of North America.
