Calypso is a vital aspect of carnival, serving as a musical and cultural expression that reflects social commentary, storytelling, and community identity. Originating in Trinidad and Tobago, calypso music often features rhythmic melodies and clever lyrics that address political issues, social injustices, and everyday life, making it a powerful medium for voices of the marginalized. During carnival, calypso competitions, known as "calypso tents," showcase talented artists, allowing them to engage the audience and celebrate the festive spirit while fostering a sense of unity and heritage within the community.
Calypso Carnival was created in 1971.

Every year, before the Easter season on the Christian church calendar, there is a festival known as Carnival. Calypso is a genre of music which traditionally speaks about the political, social economic climate of the country or world for that matter-in short current affairs. It is one of the national musics of Trinidad and Tobago. (Others being Chutney, Rapso, Soca) The singers are called Calysonians. Calypsonians say what's on their minds or speak for the "people." During the Carnival season a competition is held among calypsonians and they vie for the title of Calypso King which is held on Dimanche Gras night. This is the Sunday night before Carnival Monday. There is a separate competition for the queens, however, they are not exempt from taking part in the Calypso Kings competition (started in 1939), which was more recently renamed the Calypso Monarch Competition for this reason). There is also a Young King's Calypso Competition which was started in 1985.
Their role is to design the carnival sets, themes and costumes. They also are involved in the develoment of the carnival itself.

Calypso is important to my culture as it serves as a vibrant expression of our history, social issues, and collective identity. Originating in the Caribbean, particularly Trinidad and Tobago, it combines rich musical traditions with storytelling, allowing communities to voice their experiences and challenges. Through its engaging rhythms and clever lyrics, calypso fosters a sense of unity and pride, while also providing a platform for political commentary and social change. It plays a significant role in celebrations, particularly during Carnival, reinforcing cultural heritage and community bonds.
It can be played anywhere though it originated in the Caribbean.
