What is Palermo?

Palermo is the capital of, and the largest city on, the island of Silicy, part of Italy. It is situated near the western end of the northern coast of the island which is, of course, situated in the Mediterranian Sea and is part of Europe. (It is also a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in South America.)

Why did rome and Carthage care about Silicy?

The Carthaginians had four ports in western Sicily and the island had an important strategic position for their trading networks in the western basin of the Mediterranean. The Carthaginians responded to a request for help by mercenaries (the Mamertines) who had seized the city of Messana (Messina, in eastern Sicily, on the strait which separates it from the mainland) which had been attacked by Syracuse, the most powerful of the Greek city-states in the east and south of the island. The Romans intervened to help the Mamertines, who were unhappy because the Carthaginians had set up a garrison in Messana. It was said that they were worried that if the Carthaginians and Syracuse clashed, Carthage may gain control of eastern Sicily, next door the mainland, which was Roman territory. Sicily at that time was a very important island. It lies in a narrow strip of water between the eastern and the western basins of the Mediterranean and is very close to Tunisia (which is where Carthage was). Therefore, it is in a highly strategic position. At that time, this island was one of the major producers of grain in the Mediterranean.
