The Mohawks had three types of government; sort of like our municipal, provincial, and federal (in Canada). The senior women in each extended family would choose two chiefs: a civilchief for normal affairs, and a military chief for solving arguments with other clans. These two chiefs would go to a town council to discuss matters (like the municipal government). A lot of the time several towns in an area would cooperate and have bigger councils to discuss important issues. Representatives from each town council would go to these (similar to the provincial government). Sometimes there was a big problem that the whole Mohawk nation needed to discuss. When that happened the representatives would go to an even larger meeting of chiefs (like the federal government). Decisions were democratically done, so the opinion of the majority of chiefs would win.
