Fruits are different in different locations, even within the eastern woodlands of the USA and Canada.

Taking the Wampanoag, Narragansett and Massachusetts tribes as a general example, there are words in their language for the fruits they knew about and ate:

  • wuttahimneash = strawberries
  • attitaash = whortleberries
  • wuttohkohkoominneonash = blackberries

Other eastern tribes gathered and ate huckleberries, cranberries, Mayapple, pawpaw, grapes, persimmon, blueberries, bunchberries, elderberry, flowering raspberries, and many more. Not all are found in all regions, so the natives only had access to local native fruits.
