For awhile, you may lose some weight, but it is not sustainable. Fruit diets are popular because fruit contains no fat, and people are often misled because of it's "light" feeling and watery composition. Many people do not realize that fruit is made up of sugar (a.k.a. carbs), and your body digests all sugars in the same way, regardless of where they came from. That said, fruit diets tend to be low in calories simply because fruit is low calorie. Fruit can also be more filling because of it's high water (and sometimes fiber, i.e. apples) content. However, fruit contains no protein. Protein is an essential building block to your body. While you may lose some fat weight on a fruit diet, it will be extremely difficult to build any muscle, which is really the key to weight loss. Fruit diets are just one among the many "fad" diets that have been developed in our generation- it is regarded as a "quick fix", but it is impossible to survive forever on fruit alone. You NEED fat and protein to live, both of which are not supplied by fruit. While you may lose weight for the first couple weeks, it is nearly impossible to sustain and you will most likely end up bingeing on high-fat foods because you are depriving yourself. The best thing you can do is eat a balanced diet and exercise- do a cardio exercise (running, elliptical, etc.) for at least 1/2 hr. five times per week, and perform weight-bearing exercises at least 1/2 hr. three times per week. This is the only tried-and-true method that guarantees long-term weight loss.

As much weight as you create a caloric deficit for. Any diet will cause you to lose weight if it allows you to take in fewer calories than you expend. How large and sustainable that deficit is will determine how much you lose. If you exercise more, or eat differently, it will affect your weight- big surprise, huh? So you can't stick a number on any diet.
