I'm unsure if this is a nutritional question or a physiologic/biological question. So I'll answer both briefly.

Nutritional: Protein is a macronutrient which is provided by the diet. Although most foods contain at least a little protein, there's not enough specific elements to make what are called complete proteins from an individual food product. I'm referring to foods such as vegetables, nuts, legumes, and cereals. Complete or quality proteins are largely those derived from meat and dairy sources, including fish.

Biological: When proteinous foods are eaten the body digests it. The food is broken down further into amino acids and through complex processes the body rebuild the amino acids into complete chains of proteins to perform functions such as muscle and tissue growth and repair.
