Triceratops fossils have been found in the US states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and South Dakota and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and date to between 68 and 65.5 million years ago. At that time the area was a subtropical, coastal floodplain with various river deltas. It was forested with plants such as conifers, cycads, ginkgoes, ferns, horsetails, and early angiosperms such as primitive grasses and palm trees. There were occasional peat swamps there, too. The region had distinct wet and dry seasons, and sometimes suffered from drought.
There are different branches of triceratops, such as triceratops horridus etc, each living in different locations and habitats. Some would live in grasslands, some would live in forests, some live in river banks and some live high altitude places. Their relative, the pentaceratops, have been found in alaska, where it was snowing and freezing all the time.
Tyrannosaurus rex was the apex predator of the local habitat, where they and Triceratops lived. T-rex may even have hunted Triceratops. However, because they were herbivores, Triceratops were far more common than T-rex. I'm not sure which of those you consider dominant.

Triceratops has been extinct for 65.5 million years, so it isn't important anymore. When it did exist, Triceratops was one of the most common dinosaurs in its habitat. It played a very important role in its ecosystem. Triceratops helped to prevent the plants it ate from overcrowding. They fertilized the soil with their feces and urea. They also provided food for Tyrannosaurus.
