Tarot cards first appeared in Europe in the mid-1400s, towards the end of the medieval period. The word apparently comes from Italian tarocchi, perhaps taken from Arabic. Most historians agree that the cards were first used in northern Italy and they were at first hand-made and hand-painted individually.
