Propoganda was the main method used to deter communism in America. 'Witch Hunts' was also notoriously used to discourage people from Communism ideals.
Metaphorical witch hunts in the U.S. today often refer to intense social and political campaigns against individuals or groups perceived as deviating from accepted norms or beliefs. These can manifest in various forms, including cancel culture, where public figures face backlash for controversial statements or actions. Such hunts tend to polarize society, fueling division and stifling open dialogue, as people become fearful of expressing dissenting opinions. Ultimately, these metaphorical hunts reflect broader cultural struggles over identity, values, and accountability in contemporary society.

The "Witch Hunts" were methods employed by Conservative Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy during the cold war. He basically said he had a list of Communist sympathizers that were able to infiltrate the government, these claims were however, unfounded, which eventually lead to his censure and political decline as fellow Conservatives and Republicans saw him as a liability. The term McCarthyism means to accuse someone of disloyalty, treason, and/or subversion without evidence. People who questioned McCarthyists were branded as communists, traitors, etc.
