People coming from south of the US are usually coming from a much poorer background than those who come from Canada. Since moving from Canada to the US makes much less difference economically, there is much less incentive for Canadians to move to the US than those from South America, Central America, and Mexico. In consequence, there are a lot more people who WANT to come to the US from the south. Some of these countries (such as Mexico) have enshrined in their culture and laws the right to move wherever they want. It is not against the law in Mexico for someone to enter the US without a visa, but it is against the law in the US for someone to do so. In the minds of many illegal aliens in the US, they have not broken any law since what the did is not against the law in their home country.

A second reason for the fence on the southern border of the US is that those coming in from that direction are usually from a much different culture than most of the US while Canadian culture is very similar to the culture of the US. Those from the south act different, look different, and speak differently from the majority of the US population so they feel more alien and different, thus there is a significant sentiment to prevent them from coming into the country and thus support for building a fence.

A third reason is that much, if not most, of the illegal drugs entering the US do so over the southern border, so there is another incentive to impede the movement of people bringing in the drugs by building fences.
