Shakes are typically defined as being ice cream and milk based. Smoothies, on the other hand, are typically made with fruits and/or veggies, juice or water, and ice. Some places will put yogurt into their smoothies as well, but it's not required.

Milk Shakes, while great at bringing boys to your yard, are not a suitable meal replacement. Smoothies are, as long as their made with real fruits and veggies.

Not that you asked, but my favorite smoothie recipe is:

1 banana

1 handful of baby spinach

1 spoonfull of peanut butter

1 spoonfull of non-fat greek yogurt

Skim milk

Throw all the solid ingrideints in a blender, and add about 2 inches of milk. Blend. If it's too thick, add more milk. If you want your smoothie cold, you can either add a handful of ice cubes, or if you think of it ahead of time, cut your banana and freeze it.
