Tequila can be sweet, but it is most commonly a bit spicy.
Although all tequila must be made in the tequila region of Mexico to be so named tequila (Otherwise it is known as Mezcal), not all brands utilize the same quality of ingredients, and many use different cooking and distillation techniques which lead to various differences in the taste.
In the past 20 years many brands have entered the market that have concentrated on a sweeter / less heat profile. Brands that come to mind that tend be be sweeter, herbal and flower-y with less heat and less (or no) burn include many boutique brands such as Corvo, Voodoo Tiki, Asombroso, Partida.
Additionally, some companies now actually distill flavored tequilas, or "Infuse" tequilas often resulting in very sweet tequilas. Voodoo Tiki Tequila (www.voodootiki.com) makes a Prickly Pear infused Tequila, a Blue Raspberry Infused Tequila and a Lime Infused Tequila. 267 Infusion (http://summerlinwine.com/spirits.html) makes a tequila with actual Oranges floating in the bottle (they make a 2nd with chili peppers inside - but not sweet).
Jose Cuervo had a line of flavored tequilas on the market a few years ago. They were not well received, they were flavored, but not very sweet. You may be able to find some bottles on closeout if you look carefully.
Patron makes a semi sweet Coffee tequila that is very popular worth sampling.
The main ingredient in tequila is the blue agave plant. The agave plant contributes to the flavor profile of tequila by providing a sweet and earthy taste, along with herbal and fruity notes. The plant's sugars are fermented and distilled to create the unique flavors found in tequila.

The purpose of orange juice in a tequila sunrise is to provide a sweet and citrusy flavor that balances the potency of the tequila. It also contributes to the drink's signature gradient appearance, resembling a sunrise, with the orange juice mixing with the tequila and the grenadine sinking to the bottom. This combination enhances the overall taste and visual appeal of the cocktail.
When tequila is "Born" it is clear. 100% Blue Agave Tequila is the starting point, or "the Birth Moment" for all tequilas. This is a clear liquid. The result is usually a fresh, clean sometimes herbal sometimes sweet tequila. If you take that Silver Tequila and you age it in a brandy barrel for up to a year it will take on some of the color of the wood. This will result in a "Reposado" tequila. Leaving it in the barrel for over a year will give you a darker color, resulting in an "Anejo" Some manufacturers use artificial coloring techniques (Gold Tequila) in order to fool the international market into thinking they are buying a quality product.
