For a classic martini, I recommend using a London dry gin like Tanqueray or Beefeater. These gins have a strong juniper flavor that pairs well with vermouth in a martini.
For starters, a true martini uses gin, not vodka.Beyond that, it is up to the bartender or whoever as to what kind of vodka you use for a vodka martini. That said, plain vodka appears to be most common.
You can use any kind of a cocktail shaker to make a martini. I think the stainless steel ones with lids are the best.
