Mr. Boston or Jacquin's make a rock and rye whiskey that is available at your local liquor or State store. There are several recipes for making your own on the internet by using a GOOD Rye Whiskey (such as my favorite, Old Overholt) and a mixture of other goodies. Jacquin's Rock & Rye, as well as Mr. Boston's brand are available at Internet Wine and Spirits.http://www.internetwines.com/rws27988.HTML At our bar "Rye" in San Francisco, we keep a decanter of our own Rock and Rye behind the bar. It is made with various Rye whiskeys, Horehound Rock Candy, Dried Lemon peel, Cassia bark, Clove, Dried Horehound, and a couple of other secret ingredients. We serve it as a Rock and Rye Toddy which i two oz. of rock and rye with 2 oz. boiling water, with a fresh lemon peel. The mixture is like a whiskey TheraFlu. Tastes great, and the horehound is an herbal remedy for whooping cough. we also serve it as a base for a Manhattan recipe which is quite good too.

A distilled spirit is made by first producing a fermentable liquid. The liquid can be a grain-based preparation (from which we get whiskeys and vodkas), a fruit juice (from which we get brandy) or a sugar solution (if the sugar is from cane we get rum, if it's from agave we get tequila). Yeast is added and the liquid is allowed to ferment so as to produce alcohol. This is then put in a still and heated to the boiling point of alcohol; the alcohol is recovered from the steam. Once you cool it, you have a spirit. If you then use the spirit to dissolve things, you'll have an elixir. A popular one is "Rock 'n' Rye" which is rock candy dissolved into rye whiskey. Most elixirs, though, are medicines.
