Any change in density will cause diffraction (and or reflection) of seismic waves.

Some key density boundaries include the Moho or Mohorovičić discontinuity which marks the boundary between the crust and the mantle, and the Gutenberg discontinuity which marks the boundary between the mantle and the outer core.
