The temperature at which metals become soft is called the forging temperature. The forging temperature of nonmagnetic stainless steel is 1150 Celsius or 2102 Fahrenheit and the forging temperature of magnetic stainless steel is 1095 Celsius and 2003 Fahrenheit.

Hardness is most commonly measured on the mohs scale. Talc has a hardness of 1 while diamond has a hardness of 10 on the mohs scale. You can test hardness at home by looking up the hardness of a common material and then scratching it or using it to scratch the item in question. Harder materials scratch softer materials and by using a variety of different materials you can zero in on what the hardness value is.

Steel is often referred to as hard or soft but there are a many types of steel with different properties. Heat treating is often used to alter the hardness or temper of the steel. A rule of thumb for determining whether a piece of steel is considered hard or soft is to try to scratch it with a steel file from the hardware store. If it is scratched by the file it is probably soft and if it doesn't scratch it then it is hard.

But your question is super vague. I would rather get hit by a bag full of feathers than a bag full of annealed (softened) steel and so in that respect I would say that it is hard.

Their are alot of stainless steel alloys, thats for sure. Stainless steel in general is a soft alloy, thats why its used in lots of stampings. Stainless is also rather gummy when machining.

It is metal. Specifically a very complex alloy of several metals and a few nonmetals.
