Arabic is a large group of dialects, and they are not all mutually intelligible. The most widely spoken languages of the Arabian peninsula are:

  1. Arabic, Gulf
  2. Arabic, Hijazi
  3. Arabic, Najdi
  4. Arabic, Standard

In addition to Arabic dialects, the following 6 languages are spoken:

  1. Mehri: the largest Modern South Arabian language, with more than 70,000 speakers in Yemen. In addition to these, more than 50,000 live in Oman, and about 15,000 are situated farther afield in Kuwait due to emigration.
  2. Soqotri: another relatively numerous example, with speakers on the island of Socotra isolated from the pressures of Arabic on the Yemeni mainland.
  3. Shehri: frequently called Jibbali, "of the Mountains", with an estimated 25,000 speakers
  4. Bathari: about 200 speakers
  5. Harsusi: about 1000–2000 speakers in Oman.
  6. Hobyót: about 100 speakers in Oman.
