This collision movement continues today and Mount Everest is still growing.

The formation of Mount Everest was caused by the rapid movement northward of the Indian tectonic plate pushing up and against the Asian plate. It is estimated that Mount Everest was formed 60 million years ago.

Mount Everest was shaped due to glaciation... as a past ice age moved the glacier towards Mount Everest, Arêtes were formed (steep knife edge ridges) which left a pyramid summit known as a horn.

It is thought that the summit of Mount Everest started at the bottom of the ancient Tethys Sea, the motion of the Indian subcontinental plate and the urasian continental plate colliding, about 30 - 50 million years ago, caused the mountain to rise up and become the highest mountain on the Earth
